Appalachian International Art Show:

CANA, in cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University and Glenville State College is proud to present the Appalachian International Art Show. The show is being hosted at Carnegie Mellon from April 24-28, and will feature the works of artists from the Appalchian region. Pieces range from traditional paintings, to rustic woven baskets and quilts.

Bedford, Bedford County, PA:

The community of Bedford County is engaged in a project to deliver the first community broadband network in the Commonwealth, indeed one of the first in the nation, based on the emerging wireless technology known as WiMAX .

This initiative is being conducted under the leadership of the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce and Bedford County Development Association with support primarily from CANA. Additional technical assistance is being provided by the Appalachian Regional Commission's telecommunications program.

CANA, Bedford Area School District and Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh are partnering to provide distance learning and cultural outreach programs through interactive video conferencing using the web and ultimately Internet 2 connectivity.

Glenville, Gilmer County, WV:

Glenville is located in Gilmer County, one of the least populated counties in the State of West Virginia. The Glenville community has seven T1 access lines connecting the state college, the primary and secondary school system, courthouse and local medical center. Businesses and residents of the county do not have broadband Internet access.

The Glenville wireless project seeks to improve the local community through

  1. making a more efficient economic telecommunication market through aggregation of demand and
  2. optimize the use of the high-speed network through education and e-commence initiatives.

Braxton/Gilmer Counties Research Zone Project:

The research zone was established by the West Virginia State legislature to provide economic development to these counties using cutting edge technologies.  This project seeks to deliver high-speed access through a wide area network supporting two counties in central West Virginia.  CANA will bring newly developed wiMax standards to provide this network in a cost effective and efficient manner.  CANA is partnering with Braxton County Development Association, key representatives from the political, educational and health care communities and Pittsburgh Gateways Corporation (include link).

Perryopolis, Fayette County, PA:

Perrypololis located in one of the poorer counties in Pennsylvania.  The business community was beyond the reach of commercial DSL services in the area.  CANA and the Fraizer School District implemented a canopy network to provide Internet connectivity to the business community.  The operation and expansion of the network has been turned over to our private enterprise partner American Broadband.  We point with pride to the self-sustainability of this project, linking private and public interests.

Hôpital Albert Schweitzer, Deschapelles, Haiti:

Hôpital Albert Schweitzer has served Haiti since 1956.  Larrimore Mellon began this philanthropic effort, inspired by the work of Albert Schweitzer.

CANA is working with the hospital to implement an intranet to connect the central facility with twelve remote dispensaries.

Technology is not bounded by geography.  CANA is privileged to add its expertise to this noble effort.

Intermediate Unit 1, Fayette, Greene and Washington County, PA:

Internet2 is a high-speed access application, whose time has come.

Internet2 is a revolution in education and telemedicine, allowing distance multi-directional communication in real-time with unequaled resolution. The applications of I2 in rural educational and medical institutions have far reaching implications.

CANA is indebted to Mike Hernon, consultant to the Appalachian Regional Commission, for guiding our Internet2 activities.
